Copper dog bowl for drinking water

This copper dog bowl is pure copper, hammered by hand on the outside and polished smooth inside. It holds 700 ml, about 24 fl oz or three cups, which makes it a medium bowl: the right size for a cat or a small to medium dog. It sits in a black rubber base ring, so it stays where you put it on tile or wood and does not ring against the floor.

It is a water bowl. Fill it with plain drinking water, empty and refill it every day, and use a separate bowl for food.

For water only

Copper is bare metal, and the FDA Food Code (section 4-101.14) bars copper from contact with acidic food. Wet dog food goes in a steel or ceramic bowl. This bowl holds water and nothing else.

A large dog will empty 700 ml quickly. For a big breed, refill it twice a day or set two bowls out.

Hand-hammered copper in a non-slip base

Each bowl is shaped and hammered by a coppersmith, so the dimples on the sides are never quite the same from one bowl to the next. The inside well is polished smooth and is easy to wipe. The rubber ring grips the floor and takes the knocks a metal bowl gets when a dog pushes it around.

Check with your vet before you switch to copper

Some dogs store too much copper in the liver. The Animal Medical Center in New York names Bedlington terriers, West Highland white terriers, Doberman pinschers, Dalmatians and Labrador retrievers as breeds with this tendency (Animal Medical Center article, 30 August 2023). If your dog is one of these breeds, has a liver condition or is on a copper-restricted diet, use a steel bowl instead. For any dog or cat, ask your veterinarian before you move to a copper water bowl. We make no health claim for this bowl in either direction; it is a handmade copper bowl for water.

WHY BUY FROM COPPER HEALER +

I am Akshat Goel, the founder of Copper Healer. I go to the coppersmiths in India myself, pick the pieces that are worth selling, and leave the rest.

Before any bowl is packed, I check it by hand: the copper body, the seam, the base ring seated tight, no dents in the rim or the well. The hammering should be even and the inside polished clean. A bowl that fails any of this does not ship.

I have kept a daily practice of classical yoga and meditation for many years, and copper is part of my own home. That is why I care about what the metal is and how it was made. Read our story for more about the people behind the pieces.

Pure Copper +

Pure Copper

The bowl is pure copper, shaped and hammered by hand, with no lacquer or coating inside. The only other material is the black rubber ring on the base. Copper is a soft, heavy metal that does not pull a magnet, and it darkens with use; both are signs you are holding copper and not a plated bowl.

How to Use & Care +

Fill the bowl with plain drinking water at room temperature. Empty it, wash it and refill it with fresh water every day.

Wash by hand with mild soap and warm water, then dry it. Do not put it in the dishwasher, and keep the rubber ring away from hot water for long. When the copper darkens, rub it with half a lemon dipped in salt, rinse and dry; a dull patina is normal and comes back.

Water only. Never serve food in it. If your pet has a medical condition or a limit on copper, or is a breed named in the details above, ask your veterinarian before use.

Shipping & Returns +

Standard shipping to the US: free. Each bowl is handmade and checked by me in India before it ships, so it takes a little longer than a bowl pulled from a US warehouse: 1 to 4 business days to pack, then an estimated 10 to 15 business days in transit. What arrives is pure copper that one person has looked over.

Customs processing, carrier delays, weather and remote-area delivery can add days. See the shipping policy for methods, charges and customs terms.

Returns

Return requests are accepted within 30 days of delivery. Write to [email protected] with your order number first; returns need approval and an RMA number before anything is sent back. Regular returns must be unused and unwashed, with the original packaging. You arrange and pay for trackable return shipping to India, and the original shipping cost may be deducted. Read the returns policy before you order.

Copper dog bowl questions

Is this copper dog bowl solid copper or copper-plated? +
It is pure copper all the way through, hammered by hand, with no lacquer or coating inside. The black ring on the base is rubber. Copper does not pull a magnet and it darkens with use; a plated steel bowl does the opposite on both counts.
Can my dog eat food from a copper bowl? +
No. This bowl is for drinking water only. The FDA Food Code bars copper from contact with acidic food. Keep a steel or ceramic bowl for food and this one for water.
Are copper dog bowls safe for dogs and cats? +
Not for every dog. Some breeds are prone to storing copper in the liver: the Animal Medical Center names Bedlington terriers, West Highland white terriers, Doberman pinschers, Dalmatians and Labrador retrievers. Those dogs, and any dog with a liver condition or on a copper-restricted diet, should drink from steel. Ask your veterinarian before you switch any dog or cat to copper.
How big is the copper dog bowl, and which pets does it suit? +
It holds 700 ml, about 24 fl oz or three cups, and measures 22 cm across the base ring and 10 cm high. That is a medium bowl, right for cats and small to medium dogs. A large dog can use it too; you will refill it more often. There is one size on this page.
Does the bowl slide or tip when my dog drinks? +
The bowl sits in a black rubber base ring that grips tile, wood and laminate, so it stays put when a dog pushes at it. The wide base and the weight of solid copper keep it from tipping. It is quieter on a hard floor than a bare metal bowl.
How do I clean a copper dog bowl? Can it go in the dishwasher? +
Empty it, wash it by hand with mild soap and warm water, and refill it with fresh water every day. No dishwasher. When the copper darkens, rub it with half a lemon dipped in salt, rinse and dry. The darkening is normal for bare copper and is not a fault.
