Copper water vessels for the overnight habit

A copper water vessel is filled in the evening and left to stand until morning, and the water that comes out is what Ayurveda calls tamra jal. All six pieces here are pure copper, handmade in India, with no lacquer or coating inside. Five are hand-hammered; the Ayurvedic bottle is smooth.

How to choose a copper water vessel

Water you keep overnightVesselSizeClosurePrice
One person, by the bed or at a deskCopper Carafe with Lid900 ml (30 oz), about 350 g, 13 × 13 × 21 cmCopper lid$55.95

A couple or a familyCopper Pitcher with Lid2 litres (68 oz), about 480 g, 7.5 in tall, 4.5 in wideFitted lid with knob$69.95
Glasses in the same boxCopper Carafe with Cup or Copper Pitcher Set2, 4 or 6 copper glassesAs above$85.95 (carafe set) / $99.95 (pitcher set)

Start with size. The carafe's 900 ml is a little under four 8 oz glasses, and the pitcher holds over twice that.

Then think about the lid. Water standing for hours wants a cover, so the carafe and pitcher each come with a copper lid. A bottle has a screw cap and can go in your bag next morning.

Last, think about where it will stand. At 21 cm tall the carafe fits a nightstand or desk. The pitcher, with its welded handle, belongs on the dining table. Keep any of them at room temperature, out of the fridge.

Using a copper water vessel, evening to morning

1. Before the first fill, wash it with warm water and mild soap. 2. In the evening, pour in plain, still water at room temperature. 3. Let it stand 6 to 8 hours; overnight is ideal. 4. Drink it within 24 hours, never longer. Then empty, rinse and refill.

Hot water, lemon water, juice, milk, tea and coffee go in another jug.

Caring for copper

Wash by hand, never in a dishwasher. Copper darkens with air and water. For the shine, rub it with lemon and fine salt or diluted vinegar, rinse well and dry with a soft cloth. Or keep the patina.

Akshat Goel here; I founded Copper Healer. I keep my water in our copper every day, buy from the smiths who make these pieces, and look at their copper sheets when I'm at the workshop. Before an order leaves, I check the finished pieces. I have practised yoga and meditation for a long time and perform the Agnihotra fire in its copper pyramid; that practice is where my care for this metal began.

Copper water vessel questions

How long should water stay in a copper vessel?

Overnight is the custom: 6 to 8 hours, so water poured at bedtime is drunk the next morning. Pour out what is left within 24 hours, then rinse the vessel and refill it.

Which copper water vessel should I buy: bottle, carafe or pitcher?

Choose by where the water will sit. The 1 litre bottle has a screw cap and travels ($49.95); the 900 ml carafe has a copper lid and stays by the bed ($55.95); the 2 litre pitcher has a fitted lid and serves the table ($69.95). The carafe and the pitcher also come in sets with 2, 4 or 6 copper glasses.

How do I clean a copper vessel?

Hand-wash it in warm water with a drop of mild soap and dry it straight away. When it darkens, rub it inside and out with lemon and salt, or diluted vinegar and salt, then rinse and dry. No dishwasher and no steel wool.

Is a copper water vessel lined inside?

Ours are not. The water rests against raw copper, so only plain water goes in.

What is tamra jal?

Tamra jal is the Ayurvedic name for drinking water kept in a copper vessel, usually overnight, and drunk the following day. That is what our Ayurvedic Copper Water Bottle is named for.

Can I heat water in a copper vessel?

No. These vessels are made for plain water at room temperature. Keep them off the stove and out of the microwave, and pour hot drinks into something else.
